Friday, Sept 24 – The 2021 Our Lady of the Wayside Wildcat Prowl kicked off bright and early at 8:30 this morning as the Pre-K students were met with cheers and high-fives from their 4th grade “Buddies” and then received a very special escort around the block by officers from the Arlington Height Police Department. The excitement was evident in their smiles as they met Willie the Wildcat and took class photos under the blue-and-white balloon arch provided by LolliPop Balloon Company (owned by OLW parent Michelle Gambro).
The day progressed a little differently than recent years, with the walk around Pioneer Park replaced by a track-a-thon event, where the students in grades K through 6 took turns running laps around the OLW track and cheering for each other as part of their first “Buddy” event of the new school year. The kids were challenged with a goal of 2,021 total laps for the school to earn a free dress day, and each class had a goal of 200 laps to earn something special from their teachers. A couple teachers even decided to walk laps as well in support of the goal!
Parents, Grandparents, and other OLW family and friends came to cheer on their students and many stuck around to talk to other parents and teachers during what turned out to be a beautiful sunny day. During the afternoon, the 7th and 8th graders also went over to the park to do their relay races, then the whole school gathered back up at the end of the day for a special pep rally, including the first performance from our newly formed OLW Cheer Team (shout out to coach Candie Schwaner)!
Also at the pep rally came the big announcement: that goal of 2,021 laps was obliterated, as the kids ran 3,712 laps (or about 445 miles) during the day, with every class meeting their individual 200-lap goal!
In addition to the fun day encouraging fitness and friendship, the spirit-wear and NUT card sale accompanying the Wildcat Prowl earned over $10,000 for the OLW Boosters, which funds all aspects of the OLW athletics programs, from league and referee fees to equipment purchases and gym upgrades. The Boosters are grateful for the continued support shown by parents and parishioners.
